Closing day at the Fair, had a little bit of every thing, from the demo derby to tigers, livestock shows, mud volleyball, rides, chainsaws and a lot more.

(2011-7-30) Dubuque County Flood Damage (Photos)

The damage is not pretty, I knew Cedar Ridge Road would be bad and what kind of mud was on 52 north, but Mines of Spain got hit good and had multiple mud slides and maybe 100 trees down in the park. The most surprising damage was Swiss Valley Park which will need a lot of work, the stream has reclaimed more of the park and now part if it flows down the middle of the park where the road once was. Even though the park is on flat ground the water was strong enough to take out most all posts, grills, fences and tables.

The 2011 Earth Jam was held at the Mines of Spain on Friday. Displays and children’s activities were setup and the Banana Slug String Band performed. The purpose of the Earth Jam was to educate, inspire, and have entire families participate in making responsible decisions for the earth.

Thanks to some local scouts and a group of naturalist we got some photographs with a human outline of the Bird Effigy Mound outside Galena. The mound has a wingspan of over 200 feet and is the last know bird effigy in Illinois.
